MIDDLE-NORTH ROADS

WHANGAREI COMPLAINS At Thursday’s meeting of the Whangarei County Council, Mr. F. Elliott complained that tourists going North on the main highway at Whakapara had found the road impassable during the recent wet weather. He contended that the alternative route via Jordan should be made a second-class highway. It was decided to spend £9OO on the purchase of a new road grader. Thursday was agreed to be the most satisfactory day for the statutory halfholiday, and will be retained throughout the county. The Minister of Public Works wrote refusing an application for an increased allocation for roading. Members protested that the present grant was inadequate. Further representations will be made.
