Dundas Boy or Kotuku Jack

TIMARU TROTS TO-MORROW THE Timaru Trotting Club, which this year is holding two 1 one-day fixtures, will strike its first blow for 1929 tomorrow, when the summer carnival will he staged, and Judging by the fine list of acceptances received, there should be no dearth of interesting sport.

lhe Timaru Club has made up a lot of ground during the last few years and since receiving an extra, permit two fixtures have been held each year. The executive has played a changing game during the double permit period, trying the separate system against the dual policy, but so far it lias evidently proved an even break. When Waitaki Girl won the Timaru Handicap in 3 924, it marked the last ot the “singles,” the authorities recognising the claims of the club to another permit by making a grant for the succeeding year, and the executive decided to hold a two days’ carnival in March. Tlie Cup was the chief fixture c*n the first day, and was won by , an outsider in Partner, while the big j °J} t,le next day, the President’s Handicap, was annexed by Olive Huon. The following season saw the dates separated, and in October, 1925, Black Admiral led tlie field home in the President’s Handicap. In 1926 a similar policy was adopted. Menember winning th© big race, President’s Handicap. Last year it was decided to hold tlie programmes together, and after Col one Pointer, dam of the sturdy young Kingcraft, had won the Cup, Zenith pulled out the prize on the j final day in the President’s Handi- | tap. ' When the committee got busy with its arrangements for the present season, a reversion was made to the splitting policy, with the result that January and March were selected as the most suitable periods for tlie Timaru operations. To-morrow will witness the presentation of the first card for 192 9, when everything points to the function being successful from every point of view. THE CARD REVIEWED The day’s sport will open with a heat for square trotters, and a motley crew will contest the CLAREMONT HANDICAP,

Of tho novices on the front the Triumph representative, Blue and Gold, has been expected to break the ice for j some time and may do so now. Then Lucky Voyage is a likely sort, and only wants to go right to land the goods, ( while Scuttle is a promising trotter. Midland has not yet shown the form of two years ago, but is on the improve, and Koro Peter, having tasted the sweets of victory on the Coast, may go on with the good work. Koro Peter and Midland may find most support. Next on the schedule is a race for improving pacers, and again a mixed lot will be in action in the aptly-named IMPROVERS’ HANDICAP

Rose Queen . . Lt Lindbergh . . 60 Slogan .... Lt The nine on the limit represent the green brigade, of whom little is so far known, and Sunny Bob, who is close to this lot. will no doubt be preferred. John Appear is a useful pacer ancl should be at home here, while Onoto is expected to shortly write his name on the winners’ list. Mary Locanda and Lindbergh are the backmarkers, and the latter has recent winning form on his side. Sunny Bob and Lindbergh may claim most attention. A big field of pacers, including many promising and proved performers, will parade for the chief event of the day, the PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP

On the front are Invader and Harold Burwood. and despite his failures at Epsom the former will prove a tough nut: to crack, and should, find the Southern track more to his liking. Avenger is always dangerous in such society, and Kotuku Jack has made an appreciable return to his best form and will keep all bands busy. Menernber is one to remember, and is capable at any time of upsetting calculations. Macaranda was in the limelight at the Christchurch National carnival, and if he repeats that form will be a nuisance. Jolly Pet has not come lip to expectations so far this season, but the day he leaves the peg correctly he will be on hand at the other end. Billy Sea must . not be overlooked in such a beat, while the rapidly improving Dundas Boy will have ra host of followers. Trampfast is a good trotter and the consistent Author Jinks will be on deck when it comes to the finish. Dundas Boy and Kotuku Jack will find most favour, but if either is absent Invader will claim attention. A good field, without any pretentions to class, will go to the post for the LEVELS HANDICAP Of £130; 3.36 class; 1J miles

With such a batch on the limit it will be a case of position and alertness

ward Maid, Harold Logan and Listen In are not devoid of pace, while Roldena is an old hand and sure to bo prominent. June de Oro is a promising sort and Logan Brae and Erin’s Lynn must not be passed over lightly. Public opinion may favour Roldena and June de Oro. While the pacers are having a respite the trotting fraternity will parade for tho WAISIATE HANDICAP

A few useful ones appear on the front line and Carclo, Kyra and Peter Lin are all capable of going a solid two miles. Nelson Prince is an improving trotter, while New Metford only requires to be 0.K.. on the day to keep the opposition busy. Avalanche is due to crack the ice any time now, while Quickfire has at last come right after many failures. Repute will be suited by the jotirney, and further back Sea Queen, Lady Fan and Commander

Bingen have good fighting chances. Quickfire and New Metford may receive most support, but with the latter not present, Peter Lin will attract. There is a toLich of society about the field that will compete in the prize in the.

Lulu Lad ... 24 Arran Chief . 60 Bonnie Prince has received promotion, but should find Macaranda a tough associate. Linglield’s form has not been very startling this season, but the way Travis Axworthy beat his field at Alexandra Park in November will ensure him a solid following! Warepa is no sluggard, while Evelyn Locanda is endowed with a fair turn of speed, and should find the journey to her liking. Milo Minto has recent winning form as a recommendation, Avenger is knocking each time out, and Arran Chief is back to his best form. Favouritism may rest with Travis Axworthy and Evelyn Locanda. Some useful young pacers are billed to make their appearance over a distance in the

penalty earlier, the mare will find favour with backers, as she won at tlie distanco last year at Ashburton, and Wild Nita is another that can go fairly

quick and stay. lone and Kiowa are striking form, and Becky Mine has recently been on the winning list. Curfew Boy is improving and Delightful is one full of possibilities. Great Logan is a great pacer and shoLild beat all those about him, while further back Mercury, a dual winner at the Addington New Year fixture, will command respect. The final order will probably be Great Logan and Mercury. The programme will reach finality with a popular event for the saddle merchants, a good number of whom will go to the post for the FAREWELL HANDICAP Of £160; 2.19 class; 1 mile (saddle) Bingen Patch 3-it Satinbird . . Lt On tlie front is Bingen Patel*, a useful sort with the weight on top, while Hackthorne and King Abdallah are a pair with good credentials at this department of the business. Roger Lyon is consistent, and then there is the ex-Aucklander, Satinbird, who could catcli swallows if in the humour. Young J. Bryce may induce him to do his best, but his intimate friends will be satisfied to let him chase the stake. Chef is coming forward as a useful pacer, and Logan King can carry weight in approved style. Macaranda is nicely placed, but has earlier engagements, while the back markers, Okoura and Royal Serene, are capable of notching a merry mile. Hackthorne and Macaranda (if reserved) may be tlie elect, but in the latter’s absence Chef will have friends. TROTTING FIXTURES Timaru T.C. —January 12. Wellington T.C. —January 39.
