CHARGES HELD FALSE
NO BRIBERY OF SENATORS RUSSIAN AND MEXICAN GOLD (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) WASHINGTON, Wednesday. A sensation has been caused by the announcement that a Committee of the Senate has been secretly investigating certain documents, here and abroad, purporting to show that Senators Borah and Norris each received £20,000 from the Soviet Ambassador to Paris. Other documents relate to a charge that Senators Borah, Norris, La Pollette and Heflin received £243,000 from the Mexican Government. The committee . to-day issued a unanimous declaration to the effect that the charges were absolutely false and the doctiments forgeries. The documents relative to the Mexican matter had been under investigation for more than a year, but the Russian aspect came as a complete surprise. The committee’s report indicates the existence of an elaborate system for the dissemination of these forged documents. The chairman of the committee, Mr. Reed, describes the system as a nefarious traffic. He says the whole matter would be amusing if it did not trifle with the reputations of distinguished Americans—reputations which it is to the interest of all Americans to hold above suspicion.
