TENNIS GATE-TAKING
BETTER RETURNS AFTER CHRISTMAS PROPOSAL TO ALTER DATES (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. In support of the proposals to transI fer the dates of the New Zealand i tennis championships to the end of j January, it is pointed out that the j gate money earned by holding the j meeting after the Christmas season j would be markedly greater. This will be so mainly because of the fact that clashing dates with ! other fixtures will be avoided and j there will be no race meetings to atj tract spectators who ordinarily would j attend the championships. It is pointed out that after the Auckland races ended during the recent chain--1 pionship meeting gate receipts -rose by almost 200 per cent. In addition to the proposal to limit entries for future events, there will be i a motion before the next meeting of j the council suggesting that players I should be nominated by their various | associations. Tnis is designed to raise • the standard of play, facilitate matches I and to allow the players themselves to conserve their energy.
