WORK FOR WINTER
AVOIDING SEASONAL UNEMPLOYMENT WELLINGTON PROPOSAL (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. Important proposals for unemployment relief are afoot in Wellington, and it is hoped that they will have the effect of materially reducing the total of unemployed during the coming winter. The proposals, which are supported by men prominent in local politics, are designed to provide more work in the winter months, so that the seasonal fluctuation of labour will be lessened, and the demand for manual workers at least made more constant. They take the form of suggestions that as much local body constructional work as possible should be allocated to the winter, that the overhauling and reconditioning of large plants should be set down for the wet season, and that there should be co-operation between the bodies concerned to bring this about. The suggestions, it is expected, will be tabled before the committee which is at present investigating the question of unemployment, and later the Government may be invited to call a special conference to discuss the matter.
