TROTTING

By ABAYDOS. “DIL” EDWARDS OPENS NEW YEAR WELL CANTERBURY PARK WINS SUCCESSES ON WEST COAST When M. B. Edwards, the young Christchurch trainer-reinsman, was present at the recent Auckland carnival he was a sick man and scarcely able to do justice to himself or his charges. lie succeeded, however, in scoring a victory on the second day with the moody mare Wharepiana, but that was his last appearance at Epsom for the session, as he left the following day for South, where he had a team engaged at Addington on New Year’s Day. A Royal Trot Young Edwards improved on the homeward journey, and had a wonderful run at the Canterbury Park meeting, winning live races, these being recorded by Mercury in the Lyttelton Handicap, Sarsaparilla in the Stewards* Handicap,. and Arran Chief in the Au Revoir Handicap on the first day, while iNeerson wgn the Prebbleton Handicap and Mercury the Middleton Handicap on the concluding day. Sarsaparilla and Mate o’ Mine scored seconds for the young Yaldhurst trainer, who also drove Oval into second place in the Handicap on the opening day. He then shot across to the Golden Coast where he was successful in steering winners at Greymouth and Reetton, so that the popular reins man opened his 1929 account to some tune. Another Good Branch A young brother, S. Edwards, has also been In the limelight, and met with a deal of success in Southland, where he has been handling some very promising maidens from the Willowbank stud, including Pleasant ‘Wave, Play wave, Fair Wave and Brain Wave, all of which are by Waverley. Fair Wave won the Trial Handicap at Gore, and Playwave and Pleasant Wave have met with equal success at Winton.
