Imported Geldings A recommendation of the South African select committee that might "vf e fi& a sro the attention of Australian authorities is in regard to the importation of geldings for racing purposes. To quote the South African report: “The gelding is imported purely for speculative purposes, and after his landing in South _ Africa he becomes merely a gambling pawn; is no use wliatever to tjio horse-breeding industry, when his racing career is finished, and, in addition, he is spoiling the market for the South African bred horse.” There is no gainsaying the soundness of this statement, and it is equally applicable to Australia, comments a writer in the “Australasian.” The importation of geldings is obviously against the interests of the Turf, and therefore reprehensible. In recent years a number of geldings have been imported to Australia, though nowhere near the proportion imported into South Africa. It would have been more in the interests of breeding if a considerable number of the entires that have been imported to Australia had arrived as geldings, but that is beside the present point. In South Africa there is a consensus of opinion among and -breeders—and the Jockey Club concurs—that imported geldings should be prohibited from taking part in any race ■where public money is given as a prize. The matter of imported geldings might well be discussed at the next conference of representatives of the principal racing clubs in Australia. Action on lines similar to those suggested in the South African report would be on sound, logical grounds. _ Horses that were added to the list of geldings after importation could likewise be debarred. It would close a looplioß-, though leaving open the argument that it would be an inducement to keep bad horses entire. To keep importations up to a high standard a regulation could be made that imported stallions would be ineligible to run for races below some certain fixed standard.
