NEW YEAR’S EVE RAIDS
POLICE MAKE HAUL FOR GAMING OFFENCES FINES IN CHRISTCHURCH ( Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. As a result of raids on New Year’s Eve the police prosecuted a number of people for breaches of the gaming law and several fines were imposed in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Mrs. Mary Mitchell was fined £3O jon a charge of using premises, at 52 Oxford Terrace, as a common gaming house. Her husband, Robert James Watson Mitchell, who faced a similar charge, pleaded not guilty and the case was dismissed for want of prosecution.
The Chief-Detective said that Mitchell’s premises, a fish shop, were raided on December 31. On the telephone was a list showing that nearly £ls worth of bets had been made. Soon after the police arrived Matron Rodgers answered the telephone and took three more bets, all winners. The police found a statement showing that bets were being taken for some other person, and that Airs. Mitchell was getting a commission. She had frankly admitted the offence. In fixing + wie fine, the magistrate, Mr. E. Mosley. said bookmakers were pretty hard to catch, and when they were caught they had to pay. The j fact that Airs. Mitchell had put no opposition in the way of the police had I weighed considerably with the Court. Ho could not possibly let her off with a nominal penalty, as there was conclusive proof that she was in a pretty big way of business. Albert Edward Baldwin, charged with being found on the premises, was fined £3. Charles Shroll, who admitted being on the premises, was fined £2. Patrick Walshs and Robert Alichael Cox were each charged with carrying on the business of bookmaker. Walsh was also charged with keeping a common gaming house, and Cox with assisting in keeping a common i gaming house. Albert Khouri was charged with being found, without lawful excuse, on the premises of a common gaming .house’at 66 Hills Road, i In each of the three last-men-j tioned cases accused was remanded i for a week on bail.
