QUEENSLAND FLOODS
RAIN FALLS IN TORRENTS
WIDESPREAD INUNDATION
BHISBANE, Monday. Reports from Northern and Northwest Queensland state that floods are widespread. In the Winton district, which has been in the throes of a drought for the past three years, upwards of six inches of rain fell. A train from Longreach ran into a flooded creek. The women and children on board were rescued by means of a trolley. Messages from Cairns indicate that miles of country are flooded. Torrential rain fell at Tulley, 15in. being recorded in 48 hours. The rain has given great relief. A telegram from Townsville says the Herbert River is heavily flooded and has broken its banks. There is a vast sea of w’ater as far as the eye can see.
