JANUARY IN FUTURE?

NEW ZEALAND TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS ALTERATION IN FIXTURE (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. It is probable that the 1928 lawn tennis championships will be the last time that the New Zealand lawn tennis titles will be decided at Christmas. Following the lengthy delay suffered at Auckland during the tournament just completed the Council of the N.Z.L.T.A. is to be asked to approve the playing of the championships not earlier than the third week in January. Some time ago it was suggested that the tournament should be moved from its present dates, but the opinion of the council was that the national meeting was not large enough to warrant this alteration, or the additional proposal of the management committee that the entries should be limited. The alteration is favourably endorsed by the New Zealand Association’s secretary and tournament manager (Mr. D. Murray Kean), who points out that this year some players had to spend three days in Auckland before play started, this being due to the fact that Christmas Day fell early in the week. Travelling time will be saved and. expenses minimised, as well as more settled weather being encountered. Another proposal to be made to the council is that entries for future events shall be by nomination from the various associations.
