NOTES ON THE PLAY AUCKLANDERS DO WELL WALKER BACK TO FORM (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON. Monday. Fine weather prevailed for the opening day in the New Zealand championship singles, and 17 greens were utilised for the games. Conditions were all in favour of good bowling, and some excellent play was witnessed. Those unbeaten were Maxwell Walker (Auckland). Findlay (Mount Eden), Clarke (West End), De Launay (Epsom), Ardell (Hataitai), Hazelwood (Lyall Bay), Edwards (Temuka), Porteous (Thorndon), Pollock (New town), Brighting (Hataitai), Higginson (Dunedin), Naylor (Thorndon), Lightfoot (Upper Hutt), Smart (New Plymouth), Crawford (Karori), North (Te Awamutu), and Williams (Kelburn), and Go with one life.
WALKER AT HIS BEST Walker, playing at Kliandallah green, defeated Reid (Lyall Bay), 20—15; Lowry (Kelburn), 18—14; Bennie (Balmacewan), 18—14; and in the final game accounted for Brackenridge, jun., 18—9. The professor is going strongly; and he meets Hazelwood of Lyall Bay on Tuesday. Findlay (Mount Eden) meets Brighting (Hataitai), and the clash should be interesting. Clarke (West End), who meets Ardell, of Hataitai, in the next round, defeated Langley (New South Wales), 27—18; and then Bleach, the Victorian, 21—19. This was a good contest to watch. Then he accounted for Pepper, of Upper Hutt, 19 —13, and his fourth win was over Bain, of Levin. 17 —12; Clarke showing good form. Do Launay, of Epsom, at Johnsonville, defeated Griffin (New South Wales), 21 18, and had no difficulty in disposing of the other opponents. He meets Pollock (Newtown), in the fifth round.
SMART PLAYING WELL Smart (New Plymouth), who plays Lightfoot (Upper Hutt) in his next game, had big margins in his first games with Smith (Newtown), and Smith (Lyall Bay), but had more even games with Lindsay (Caledonian) and Witcombe (Hataitai). He is going to be hard to dispose of when the postsectional play is reached. Gladding (Carlton) has three wins He lost his game to Findlay (Mount Eden). Bremner (West End) beat Kingsland, and Benefield (St. John’s) then defeated him by two points, but Bremner then accounted for Gee (Te Awamutu) and is in the fourth round.
Parsons (Ponsonby) lost his first game, but won his next three games, defeating Goss (West Australia). 23—13, Smith (Dunedin), 19—12, and Hart (Carterton), 24—10. Coltman (Carlton), at Khandallah, lost his first game to Harrison, a Victorian player. 23—13. He then defeated Glen (Island Bay), Chalmers (Sumner), and Williams (Dunedin). He is among the “one-lifers.”
THE HAMILTON MEN Pilkington (Hamilton), playing at Eastbourne, is in the running. The results from outlying greens were coming in very poorly, but it would appear that this player has three wins. Toy (Ellerslie) lias three .wins, and plays in the next round. Among those he defeated were Lowe (New South Wales), Bell, .inn. (Hamilton). The latter also has three wins. He lost his fourth game against Higginson, of Dunedin, who was unbeaten. Bell accounted for Little (V.8.A.), Tillev (Wanganui). and Sherwood (Lyail Bay). Benefield, the well-known St. John's player, has three wins. He accounted for Bremner (West End), IS—l6, and lost a lift to Edwards, of Temuka, the latter player being unbeaten. Edwards meets Porteous (Thorndon) in the next round. Ryan (Remuera) has three wins. He won a game by default, and then disposed of Smith (Kaituna) and Manley (Wellington). SCOTT LOSES A GAME Bentley, the well-known Dunedin player, has a life left, and is showing good form. He lost to Ardell. J. Scott (Caledonian), last year’s singles winner, lost a life to-day to Pollock (Newtown), who is undefeated. Pollock had a rather easy win, 25—9. Daniels (Remuera), at Thorndon, had three wins. It was noticed that none of the Australian visitors are among the “twolifers,” but quite a number appear in the fifth round with one life. With so many greens in use the results came in very slowly to-day, and it is hoped an improvement will be noticed on the second day, when players of the calibre of Walker, Smart, Findlay, De Launay Edwards and Clarke, will be seen in aeflon.
