Dame Nellie Melba, from her West End mansion, which previously was the Duchess of Atholl’s famous residence, exclusively informs the Australian and New Zealand Press Association: “I have been approached by Sir Thomas Beecham and many celebrities interested in music to assist Sir Thomas’s opera league. “The first news I learned on arriving from Australia was that Covent Garden was being torn down in two years. This made me sad. I realised that something must be done. “When Sir Thomas approached me, I determined to co-operate with him to save opera for Britain. I am therefore isSuing an appeal to all the Empire, to help to save opera. I propose to work heart and soul and to appeal with both hands. Let us commence a new era of music.”
