£loo GIFT TO BATSMEN
HOBBS AND SUTCLIFFE
LONDON PAPER CABLES MONEY
(Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Kecd. 10.35 p.m. LONDON, Sunday. The “Daily Chronicle” announces that on behalf of readers it has cabled £IOO each to Hobbs and Sutcliffe, in recognition of the magnificent part they played in .retaining the “Ashes.” It expresses the opinion that this tribute to England’s opening batsmen will be cordially approved by all cricket lovers. Hobbs and Sutcliffe rank among the best liked cricketers, and are models for thousands of boys and youths who are striving to emulate their prowess at the wickets. The “Daily Herald,” in an editorial, says that if Australia learns the lesson of the third test, that covered wickets spell a lack of bowling skill, we may see her in 1930 light back vigorously and successfully. Clem Hill, in the “Daily Telegraph” says the Australian selectors have a grand opportunity to build up a team to go to England in 1930. In Woodfull, Ponsford, Kippax, Bradman, Oldfield and A’Beckett there is the backbone of a good side. The selectors must comb out the whole country for young material. Jackson and Harris (batsmen) and Bettington and Ebeling (bowlers) are all most promising. “I do not suggest an immediate dropping of all older players, but two or three are labellable as ‘not wanted on the voyage,’ ” concludes Hill.
