FIRES RAGE IN N.S.W.
THICK PALL OF SMOKE GREAT BATHURST BLAZE Australian and N.Z. Press AssociationJ Reed. 10.30 e..m. SYDNEY, To-day. Katoomba messages state that the whole of the Blue Mountains lay under a thick pall of smoke during the weekend. The bush is burning steadily, but in the absence of wind the blaze seems likely to burn itself out. Crowds of holiday-makers, fearing ihe spreading of the dames, fled back to Sydney. A Bathurst message says serious hush fires covering a large extent of country, are raging in the district. Thousands of acres of grass and miles of fencing have been destroyed, and sheep and cattlo perished. Three hundred fire-fighters, aFter a strenuous battle, saved three homesteads. The damage is estimated at thousands of pounds. A BLAZE IN THE WEST Reed. 11 a.m. PERTH, To-day. One of the worst bush fires since the district was settled swept six farms between Tambellup and Tunney, a town in the south-west. In spite of the efforts of 200 fire-fighters the damage is reported to be very heavy.
