COURSE IMPROVEMENTS AT TE AROHA
READY FOR FEBRUARY MEETING NOTES FROM THE TRACK (Special to THE SL5>) TE AROHA, Friday. } Mr. R. B. Hines’s Lady Spalpeen per- { formed well by running second in the New Year Hurdles to Glenotus at i Ellerslie, and registered one of her best ■ performances since she has been pttt to hurdle racing. Hitherto two miles has been considered rather far for the Spalpeen mare, but she riow staying on very well. Glenstar’s win in the Uriti Handicap at New Plymouth proved him to be at least useful, and went to show that G. Reid was quite justified in taking the Day Comet gelding on tour. Glenstar is not at all suited to wet tracks, or he might have accounted for more than one race on the trip. Crown Arch, in G. A. Reid's team.
will not be long before he strikes his best form. He is doing nice work on the tracks, and has built up satisfactorily of late. Lucy Rose has recovered from her soreness, and will be ready to race at the Thames meeting. The Marble Arch mare in C. E. Mullowes’s stable has been registered as Dainty Arch. She opened lier winning account at the Matamata meeting on New Year’s Day by winning the Patetere Stakes. The mare will be a contestant at the Thames fixture. Success At Marton Although A. E. Cox’s trio raced unsuccessfully at the Manawatu meeting. Black Maire won the Maiden at Marton in a decisive fashion, and Indolent ran a second in the Junction Plate. Now that Black Maire has struck form he should increase his winI ing amount, as the half-brother io Transformer promises to improve with j itge. The distance run by Indolent was five furlongs, but she is suited to a longer race, as on the tracks she showstaying qualities. G. A. Reid's apprentice, J. W. Chandler, scored his initial win at the Matamata meeting, when he rode Joy Day to victory in the Farewell Handicap. As he is likely to rank among the light-weight brigade for a lengthy period, his services will be well in demand for a considerable time. Queen Arch is executing very satisfactory track work, and it is expected that she may be ready to race at the Te Aroha meeting next month. Lady Nestor is showing improvement in her tasks, and has built up nicely of late. Tlx© Some Boy 11. gelding. Whitioru, has sharpened up very materially. He has not been executing very fast work, but has shown galloping ability. E. A. Keesing showed a return to riding form at the Marton meeting bv winning on Nightmarch, Black Maire and Sir Roy. On the local tracks Keesing rides his full share of work, and his attendance is always appreciated by the trainers. A Welcome Improvement Local course improvements are now being proceeded with. The judge’s box has been shifted to a line in front of the stewards’ stand, the new portion of the course (about half a mile) has been fenced on both sides, and the grass around the mile track cut. Rolling the track will be fully attended to right up to the eve of the race meeting, and it is expected that some fast times will be registered next month. William Of Orange has again joined the ranks of track workers. He is filling out into a fine stamp of thoroughbred, and like other members of the Valkyrian family, knows how to gallop. Owing to the principal trainers being j away at race meetings, very little track work was done on Thursdav morning. * . Te Koroke and Belle Star, ainsl’ ran six furlongs at a good workin-r pace. Whitiora was out. but was not ! asked to go fast. Ah Wera had a little the best of Orchus in a dash over half a mile, which took 52 2-5. FlvinTresses displayed plentv of vim ov'4 once round, and will be able to race to advantage very soon.
