REMOVED COAT-OF-ARMS
TWO LADS CHARGED MAGISTRATE’S WARNING BRISBANE, Friday. At the Innisfail Police Court to-day Percy Dingwall, aged 18, and "Walter Butcher, aged 17, were charged with unlawfully damaging the coat-of-arms at the Italian Consulate on December 23. Both pleaded guilty. Inspector Mann said the accused were under the influence of drink at the time of the offence. They removed a number of signs from various buildings, and were unaware of the seriousness of their action in removing the Italian insignia. Counsel for accused expressed deep regret and said that the lads had no ill-will against the Italian Consul. The magistrate, Mr. Aitken, expressed the hope that the lads would give up drink. He warned them of the grave risk of international complications arising from their action, and ordered both to enter into a bond of £lO to come up for sentence when called upon. A message from Canberra states that the Prime Minister, Mr. S. M. Bruce, says he has not yet received a reply from the Italian Consul to his expression of deep regret at the incident.
