“COWARDLY WARFARE”

POISON-GAS METHODS CONFERENCE AT FRANKFORT (United P.A.—Ey Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Rec. 10.40 a.m. FRANKFORT, Friday. Madame Naima Sahlborn presided at an international conference to discuss modern methods of warfare, which was convoked by the International Women’s League for Peace and Liberty. The conference specially gave attention to the use of poison gas and the protection of civilians. Many international scientists and military experts were present. Professor Lewin (Berlin) condemned the use of poison gas in war as cowardly. There was no defence, because there was no antidote, so repugnant must be regarded the crime against humanity. His description was so horrifying that many women left the hall in tears.

Professor Macartney (Britain) thought it was impossible to control the chemical industry and prevent the manufacture of poison gas for warfare. The only satisfactory method was to attack all forms of warfare and endeavour to remove the war spirit.
