The Lubricant of Love
THE QUIET CORNER
(Written for THE SUN by the Rev. Charles Chandler. Assistant City Missioner.)
Ice-ages, stone-ages and iron-ages have passed, and now ice seem to be living in the machine-age. There are very few things that cannot be done by machinery these days. Clothes can be washed; coivs can be milked; floors swept and polished; rocks torn asunder; newspapers setup, printed and counted; mines sunk; continents divided; and worlds weighed. With the advent of machinery has come the lightening of human labour, and an increase in the sale of lubricating oils. No machine will run without oil. Bearings will clog, rust and run hot, and the life of the machine will be considerably shortened if the operator is sparing with his oil-can. No ship leaves port without its full complement of oilers and greasers. No matter how skilful the navigator, or how highly certificated the engineer , nothing will go well unless the oilers and greasers are well on the job. The affairs of men in this icorld would be far worse than they are . if there were no such thing as the lubricant of love Love is the oil which, poured on troubled, waters, brings a calm, or, applied to the heated bearings of our international relationships, makes for peace. It is the Balm in Gilead. Where no amount of readjustment in the machinery of life will make for smooth running, the lubricant of love will work the miracle. Our greatest need to-day is not for more politicians or for 'more preachers, but for more oilers and greasers. Just ordinary plain folk who will make a freer use of the lubricant of love in all their undertakings. NEXT WEEK: <^OLVE. °ALVE.
