Man Saves Little Girls From Flames
BLAZE AT GREY LYNN FIRE AND EXPLOSION Saved from a terrible death in the nick of time, two little girls were taken from a blazing building at 119 Crummer Road, Grey Lynn, early this morning. The house, which is of two storeys, with the top floor level with the road, was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. J. Gaskin and Mr. and Mrs. C. Stewart, who were sleeping in rooms on the ground floor. The two little girls, Betty and Mary Clifford, aged four and seven years, were visitors, and were asleep in an upstairs front room. The crackling of wood awakened Mrs. Stewart and she roused the other adults. An effort was made to get up the stairs to save the children but smoke and flames barred the way. They dashed round to the front by way of the steps at the side of the house and Mr. Gaskin forced his way into the bedroom and rescued the children.
It is a fortunate coincidence that the children had only been transferred to the front room a day or two ago. They had been sleeping in another room at the top of the stairs, which would have been a death-trap had they been sleeping there at the time of the fire. This morning the little girls looked little the worse for their experience as they posed for a Sun photographer. Almost as soon as the children had been taken from the house there was an explosion and flames shot through the roof and windows several feet into the air. The house was gutted throughout. The lire, the origiu of which is a mystery, evidently broke out in the kitchen and the flames spread through the lower floor, rqared up the staircase and through the floor, gutting every room and destroyed all the furniture. The side of the house next door, 121, was badly scorched, but the fire brigade prevented the flames from spreading. The house, which is owned by Mr. Stewart, was insured and his furniture was also covered, but Mr. and Mrs. Gaskin’s furniture was not. The insurance figures are not available.,
