N.Z'S TELEPHONES

CHEAPEST IN THE WORLD USED BY ONE IN TEN OF PUBLIC New Zealand now has one telephone to nearly every 10 of its population. A cable message from London yesterday stated that the Dominion is third on the world’s list. The United States and Canada are the only two countries which exceed her in the percentage of phones to every hundred of her population. r , During the last year New Zealand has displaced Denmark, and in the last few years she has worked up from fifth place on the world s telephone ladder. This is a really wonderful performance for such a small country. According to official figures. New Zealand is increasing her telephones at a greater rate than any other in the world. „ „ , In addition to this. New Zealand telephone rates are the cheapest in the world and return the Government a very large profit each year. Few countries have such an efficient telephone service. \ isitors to the Dominion continually sing the praises of the department. The demand for telephones is just as great to-dav, and there are waitinglists in all the centres throughout New Zealand.

During the coming year it is expected that the increase in subscribers: will be maintained. Trunk circuits radiating from the city will be furthei increased this year, now that the •‘carrier” system is being installed, and i: is only* a matter of a few years before New Zealanders will be able to tallto any part of the North or Soutl Islands from their own particular centres. _______
