Prominent As One Of New Zealand’s Ablest Golfers ♦ — ——
With one of the best records in New Zealand golf behind him, H. B. Lusk, of Auckland, Continues to be a leading figure in the sport. He is sports master at King’s College, but finds time in between his school work to apply his interest to the sport in which he specialises. In the past year particularly, H.B. established himself as one of the leading amateur golfers. He can be ranked with the open and amateur titleholders. His avocation as a schoolmaster prevents him from taking part in the amateur championships when they are held in October. Were it not for this fact, H. B. Lusk would most likely run very close to having a title to his credit. Last year, at Hamilton, H.B. did so
well that many regarded him as a certain winner of the amateur leadership. Then this year the golfermaster has had such a remarkable run of success that he has deservedly risen to real golfing prominence. Achievement after achievement has been written to his credit. And, in the midst of it all, H.B. remains a genial, smiling figure, wholly interested in golf because it is excellent sport. For H.B. has nothing but u>od words for golfing as a sport. He says that it has an appeal entirely distinct from the attractions in other recreations. Golfing, to him, is a game of rare merit, and deserving of attention. It has been in the past two years that IT.B. has really made his name
in the sport. He has played golf for many years, and had been interested in it for more. Consistency and the ability to concentrate on his play have given him success. It is doubtful if any other New Zealand golfer has shown the same degree ‘of consistency in two busy seasons. This year alone H.B.’s record in amateur play at such big tournaments at Auckland, Rotorua. Frankton, Napier, and Christchurch stand practically head and shoulders above the records of other leading players. Early in 1928 H.B. won the Auckland provincial championship. In two short holidays this year, apart from the summer vacation, he \vpn two big open tournaments, Hawke’s Bay and Rotorua. Unfortunately he was not able to follow up this impressive run cf successes by taking part in the Dominion championships, but he can be classed among the five leading amateurs. Tall, with a powerful shoulder swing. H.B. has the essential qualifications of a fine golfer. lie is likely to remain a prominent player in the sport for many seasons to come. IT. B. Lusk is a member of the Auckland Club. which has its links at Middlernore. Ho is a valued member >f a club which has produced more than the usual number of prominent players. H.B. stands as a player with genuine artistry and ability. He used to bo a fine cricketer, too. Some of his great displays in Plunket Shield matches are still talked of by the old hands.
