MAWSON FOR ANTARCTIC
MISSION TO ENGLAND MAY USE SCOTT’S SHIP (United Service) Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON. Wed. Sir Douglas Mawson's forthcoming \ journey to England is definitely conl nected with a proposed Antarctic ex- ; pedition. Moreover, there is every possibility that he will secure Captain Scott s ; ship Discovery. ' British Government officials have ; little to say about it. but they ad- ! mitted to-day that certain negotinj tions have been going on. It is j understood that these are in eontinu- ! ance of those of many months ago, ; when it was first indicated that Sir Douglas desired an expedition. The ] position seems to have been carried i considerably further. Whether Mr. Bruce, the Australian | Prime Minister, is backing the mission is not revealed in London. It is known that Sir Douglas desires a , certain sum which some people a few months ago were apparently not i optimistic about raising. MESSAGE FROM WILKINS NEW YEAR ENTHUSIASM AN ALL-NIGHT FEAST (Australian and N.Z. Pres a Association) Sir Hubert Wilkins wirelesses from •Deception Island: "No other place in the universe has I rung out the old and rung in the New Year more cheerfully than this cosmopolitan outpost of industry. Clanging bells. grenade detonations. steam whistles, booming four-inch harpooning guns, and the rattle of rifles and ; revolver fire interrupted the feast at j midnight. The boom of whaling guns stirred millions of birds, our constant companions. Revelry continued all j night. “There is still much to be done. Whether we will continue our work immediately depends on the whims of the weather.”
