RAIN STOPS TRAFFIC
COUNTRY INUNDATED CLOUDBURST IN WAIPAWA (Special to THE SUN) NAPIER. Wednesday. Gardens were extensively damaged ! by a cloudburst in the Waipawa dis- ! trict, Central Hawke's Bay, yesterday i afternoon. Flower gardens wejre ! beaten down and low-lying country inJ undated within a few minutes in a I clearly-defined track a few miles wide. At one stage all traffic was held up since no one could see more than five yards ahead. The figures on the face of the Waipawa town clock, only a few feet above the street, could not be distinguished from directly underneath. Tennis lawns, bowling greens and recreation grounds were soon under water The burst of torrential rain passed as quickly as it had come, and was fortunately quite short. Many picnickers, however, were marooned and . motorists had to abandon their trips. A hailstorm of a similar nature dur- ! ing the last fortnight did damage j amounting to several hundred pounds ( \ in the orchards.
