WAIKATO LEADS

CRICKET AT EDEN PARK

BADELEY’S FINE DISPLAY

Thanks largely to a fine innings by S. A. R. Badeley, the ex-Parnell player, Waikato headed an Auckland side captained by S. G. Smith on the first innings of a two-day match which began at Plden Park yesterday.

Auckland batted first, and although most of the side reached double

figures, the total for the innings

was only 3 73. Frater. Saunders and Hay batted well. Waikato's fielding was excellent, especially that of Badeley. Waikato replied with 302 runs. Badeley gave a delightful display of sound batting, hitting two. sixers and ten fours. Senior, Hem us and Johnston also did well. Details:

TO-DAY’S PLAY Steady batting, without much in it to inspire enthusiasm, marked the beginning bf Auckland's second innings against Waikato at Eden Park this morning. Duncan was the first man to go. He was just getting into his stride when he sent a hot one into the hands of Badeley, the Waikato captain. Cooper, who had been impressing with a variety of neat strokes, was next to go. He was clean-bowled by Going, and two of Auckland's wickets were down for only 30 runs. S. G. Smith joined Frater, and there were prospects of a reliable partnership, but Frater was given out Ibw after scoring only 12. Smith was solid. He drove forcefully, and sent the ball to the boundary occasionally At the luncheon adjournment five Auckland wickets were down for 95 runs. At no stage was the play above a fair standard. Goodwin partnered well with Smith and put on a useful 19. At 1.50 Smith was hitting out well and had scored 50.
