WELLINGTON DECLARES
BIG FIRST INNINGS TOTAL CANTERBURY BATTING Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. In the Plunket Shield match against Canterbury, Wellington had scored 433 runs for the loss of eight wickets when stumps were drawn yesterday. Rain to-day caused a postponement until tomorrow. In the circumstances 'Wellington’s prospects are very bright. The weather yesterday was perfect, and the wicket developed into a batsman’s paradise. The crowd was treated to an entertaining day’s cricket. The Canterbury bowlers and fieldsmen got a thorough gruelling, and were glad when play ceased. The fielding was very poor, and many catches were dropped. Both Lowry and Dempster gave sound solid displays, and James topped off the day’s cricket with a brilliant century.
TO-DAY’S PLAY CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The match was continued this morning. The weather was fine, but the wicket was soft, with a drying tendency. Wellington declared its first innings closed and put Canterbury in, Hamilton and Newman opening. Runs came quietly, mainly to Newman, till the total reached 31. Then a misunderstanding saw Hamilton run out for 9. Roberts came in and the half century went up after 55 minutes' play. Roberts, when 12, was clean bowled by Lowry, the total being 58. Newman reached 30 by- careful batting, the attack being accurate. Details:—*
