Nightmarch Wins In Keen Cup Contest
RACING AT MARTON SPRINT TO MISS PAT (Special to THE SUN) MARTON, Tuesday. But for a heavy shower just before the Cup, and a torrential downpour during the two following races, the Mar ton Jockey Club would have been in a position unique these days—the recording in a big turnover of an increase in totalisator returns. As it was the sum of £29,662 was handled, against £30,726 10s last year, a decrease of £1,064 10s. The course was in excellent order, a rich sole of grass providing splendid going. One of the finest races ever seen on the course was the Marton Cup, which attracted nine runners. Passing the half-mile post the field bunched, and there was not more than three lengths between them crossing the top and into the straight. At the distance Nightmarch (the New Zealand Derby winner), who was a firm favourite, drew to the front, with Star Area in strong pursuit, and Historic (last of the bunch crossing the top) also putting in a claim. Keesing kicked the favourite up at the half distance, and over the final 50yds the three-year-old was doing it comfortably, finally winning by a length and a-half from the greatly-improved Star Area, whose rider appeared to be caught napping when Nightmarch shot to the front at. the bottom of the straight.. • Historicfinished well half a length away, but he was rather a handful for. A. Hobson. Home Made (carrying half a stone overweight) was actually last into the straight and was only a head behind Historic, with Vivo almost in line, and Mountain Heath heading the remainder. Ruanui was next, but he pulled hard over the early part and tired himself out. Mendip disappointed after having every show. An Interesting Run The consistent Miss Pat put in a great finishing run in the straight to win the sprint in comfortable fashion from Keddar and The Raider (who faded in the run home), with Callanmore next, the first four horses finishing at two length intervals. Benzora, last into the straight, finished fifth, and Ruffles followed. The latter’s form did not impressThere was a surprise in the final event. Nucleus staying on well to defeat the two favourites, Singleton and Kilmezzo, handsomely and return a dividend in the vicinity of a score. Kalos won easily under a big weight in the New Year Hack and returned a false price. Black Maire walked away with the Trial Plate, having a lead of eight lengths at the home turn, which another Aucklander in High Tide (now trained by J. Eva at Paeroa) reduced to three lengths. E. A. Keesing was riding in good form, steering two winners and a second. Following are the results: — Trial Plate.—Of £120; about 6 furlongs—l Black Maire, 8.7 (E. A. Keesing), 1; 3 High Tide, 8.7 (A. G.
