THRESHOLD
NEW YEAR, 1929 The door is opened. There before your eyes Mortals in hurrying myriads come and go. Beyond them gleam their palaces and lo! The towers and turrets of the future rise By distance dimmed. May fame immortalise The name you bear into the world below And fortune all her joys on you bestow To gild the lifetime that before you lies.
And friend, when you are old and seek content, May you remember that have gone by. Your boyhood's vigour and your manhood’s pride And life’s endeavour. May sleep build a tent Of peace about your head when death is nigh, And sweet tranquillity be ever at your side.
