ONEHUNGA FIRES

CONSTABLE’S VIGILANCE SAVES HOUSE Ac 2.20 a.m. on Tuesday morning Constable F. Johnsen, who was on duty in Queen Street, Onehunga, noticed a glare in a lane near the Strand Theatre. It came from a five-roomed house owned by Mr. E. Payne. He immediately broke the fire alarm box, and on the arrival of the brigade the flames were quickly suppressed.. The house was unoccupied, but contained a few articles of furniture. The damage is fairly extensive. MOTOR-TRUCK ABLAZE Shortly after two o’clock on Monday afternoon the Onehunga Fire Brigade received a call from Sutherland’s tannery, on the waterfront, where a motor-truck standing in the vard had back-fired while being started. The flames were promptly suppressed with the chemical extinguisher carried on the fire engine, the only damage being the fusion of the wires.
