AUCKLAND TRIUMPH
WALKER SHIELD CRICKET
NORTHERNERS RETAIN TROPHY GEDYE AND STALLWORTHY IN FORM (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. After having defeated Canterbury last week by 36 runs in the first of a series of matches between Auckland, Wellington and Canterbury Surburban Cricket Associations, Auckland to-day beat Wellington by nine wickets, thereby winning the Walkrr Shield. At the close of Saturday’s play, Wellington was all out in its first innings for 60 runs, and Auckland was three
wickets down for 107. On resuming to-day, Auckland’s two not out men, A. Gedye (68) and A. Dunning (.22), were just about set when dell bowled Dunning after he had added seven more runs to his total. Shortly afterwards, after two more wickets had fallen for only a few runs, Gedye put his leg in front of a straight one by Gel I. and Auckand was seven down for 156. GEDYE’S INNINGS In scoring his 87 runs Gedye by no means played a faultless bat. having given five chances, three in the outfield and two behind the stumps. Two of the chances in the outfield were given before he had readied double figures. He scored four sixes, all off A. Miller, and eight fours. With Dunning, who scored two sixes and three fours in a total of 29, he was the only man to make ov%r 20 runs. With a deficiency of 123 runs, Wellington began its second innings disastrously, five wickets falling to E. Stallworthy and R. Burton for 26 runs. J. Taylor stopped the rot, but could get no one to stay with him. He batted very confidently, hitting one six off A. Kerr and several fours, but was prevented from carrying his bat by a ball from Kerr, which skittled his stumps, and ended the innings for 328 runs. No other Wellington player made a showing. Stallworthy, with eight wickets for 83, was the most successful bowler. Auckland needed only six runs to win when it took its second strike, but before these were scored, Dunning lost his wicket lbw to Gell. WELLINGTON
