GIGANTIC NEW DOCK

OPENED AT CALCUTTA COST OVER SIX MILLION (Australian and X.Z. Press Association) DELHI, Sunday. The Viceroy, Lord Irwin, to-day opened the new King George Dock at Calcutta. The dock at present pro-

vides six additional berths for ships, but ultimately will provide 30 additional berths. The cost of the scheme so far has been eight and a-half crores of rupees (a crore of rupees is about £750,000; a crore is 10,000,000). The water area of the

dock is 24 per cent, greater than that of the Gladstone Dock. Liverpool, which is over 580 acres. The construction of the first quarter of the full, scheme has involved the displacement of 200,000,000 cubic feet of earth.
