TUAKAU FIRE
ESTIMATES OF DAMAGE
SUGGESTION OF INCENDIARISM
The damage done by the fire and explosion at Tuakau early on Saturday morning has been estimated at about £II,OOO. Further particulars, other than those published in The Sun on Saturday, are now available. The premises of the Farmers’ Trading Company were completely wrecked. They were insured for £2,300 with the South British Office and the stock for £ 2,900 in the same office. An adjoining motor garage, owned by Messrs. A. H. Tapper and R. W. G. Wallace, was also destroyed. It was insured with the Alliance Office fo.r £9OO. and .the stock for £2,500 in the same office. The Farmers’ Trading Company estimates its loss at £6,000, and the garage proprietors estimate their’s at between £4,000 and £5,000. The report of the explosion was heard 12 miles away, at Te Kohanga. A cylinder of acetylene gas was the cause of the violent explosion. It is thought that the premises of the Farmers’ Trading Company had been broken into before the fire broke out.
