NEW YEAR TROTS AT ADDINGTON

CANTERBURY PARK CARNIVAL WILL OPEN TO-MORROW To-morrow will witness the opening of the annual New Year fixture of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club, when an interesting card will come up for presentation. For many years past the Canterbury Trotting Club has provided the enjoyment for Canterburyites at this period of the holiday season, and the annual carnival has become very popular with followers of the light harness sport. The chief event, Canterbury Handicap, has been won by some of the most classy pacers in the land, and such good ones as Our Thorpe, Cathedral Chimes, Agathos, Emilius, Hal, Junr., Don Wild, Pedro Pronto, Sheik and Peter Bingen have had their names inscribed on the roll of honour. Last year Logan Park won the big prize, and W. J. Tomkinson’s charge will again be a competitor, and has a bright prospect of winning for the second time. The first event on the card is the INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP Of £200; 3.40 limit; li miles.

The field is not large, neither is it striking from the point of class, but i Oval, Lonesome, Molly Molloy and Repute, from their handy marks, should have a good tussle, while from further back Sea Queen must be given a good chance. Repute and Sea Queen may be the favourites. The trotters’ heat is followed by the TEMPLETON HANDICAP Of £225; 3.33 limit; li milts.

Hard Knock and Audrey Dillon appeal from the front, and in the next row Nan Brent, lioritane, young Bingen, Sarona Child and Pet Locanda will add interest to the race, while Sylvie Logan and Becky Mine have recent form to recommend them. The public may prefer Nan Brent and Pet Locanda. Speculators will then turn their attention to the chief item, the CANTERBURY HANDICAP Of £1,100; 2 miles; 4.29 limit

Talent will be a nuisance off the end for the greater part of the journey, but Quality may prove his superior, while Logan Park will probably account for those in front of him. Kingscraft is a real good one, but will not have the services of I>. Withers, who has driven him in all his successes. Author Jinks and Vesuvius are a fine pair and the former will be handy. YV aitaki Girl is not done with yet, while Ahuriri if started may be favourite after his run in November. Logan p ark and Kingcraft will be solidly supported. The saddle merchants will have a show in the LYTTELTON HANDICAP ( Saddle) Of £225; li miles; 3.34 limit

If Roldena is back to form those at the back will have their work cut out to get the money, but Star Lady has been racing consistently of late, and Mercury is due to break the spell. Avonwood is a useful sort and Donard has threatened to get some money for a while. White Sun showed improved

form lately, and with Mercury may provide the favourites. Again the square gaiters will take the field, the events being the STEWARDS’ HANDICAP Of £300; 2 miles; 4.44 limit Marvin Junior Lt Nourmahal • 36 Nelson Ata . . Lt Len Wood . . 36 Katute ... 24 Our Lady * . 36 Nighborn . . 24 Sarsaparilla. . 48 Bonny Kerwood Bell 48 Belmont . 24 Duke Bingen . 72 Wild Hebe • . 24 Audominion . 84 Nelson Ata will be handy on the limit, and if Katute will go like she did at the Christchurch Cup fixture the others will have a hard task. Wild Hebe is trotting better than ever, and Nourmahal has plenty of speed, but the last little pinch may trouble her. If he goes square Sarsaparilla will keep them all busy, while Kerrwood Bell is one of the solid type. Audominion was returning to form last month and with Wild Hebe may share the honours. The next race to claim attention will be the ISLINGTON HANDICAP Of £300; 2.48 limit; li miles

William the Great won this heat last year, and he will make a bold bid to repeat the performance, and on recent form Dundas Boy must have a good chance. Pluto is about due and Golden Bubbles can scamper a merry ten furlongs. If right Zenith would lead the opposition a fine dance, and Fight Ever must now be ready. Black Admiral may do best of the back markers, but Zenith and William the Great will claim attention. Those who prefer the weight on top will parade again for the RAILWAY HANDICAP (Saddle) Of £250; 2.17 limit; 1 mile.

Dick Logan and Shadow land are a useful pair on the limit, and Milo Minto and Bing Boy are good in saddle, while Sahib was showing improving form at New Brighton. Granite City has saddle credentials that point toward success, but when the tote figures are hoisted Sahib and Dick Logan may be the elect. The final heat of the day is the AU REVOIR HANDICAP Of £300; 2.16 limit; 1 mile

Harold Burwood, Arran Chief, Lady Matchlight and Avenger have recently been racing prominently, and Omaha can run a mile at a solid clip. Golden Devon and Logan Holme are a speedy pair, while Logan Chief, dressed in his best, will be handy at the box. The public may lean toward Arran Chief and Golden Devon.
