The Third Day

THRILLING CLASSIC CONTEST

Review of Attractive Card

THE indications are that the conditions for the third day’s racing' at Ellerslie to-morrow will be a vast improvement on the two disastrous days experienced last week. The principal events to-morrow are the Great Northern Derby and the A.R.C. Handicap, in both of which contests good fields are assured. The classic presents a very open appearance, but in the handicap event form may be followed with advantage. The course will be in good order, although dead. A review of the programme follows: 1 1 ELLERSLIE HANDICAP Of £400; 1 mile Amor .... 9 o This is a race for apprentice riders. Moy Hal! . 7> S : • - ®, 8 The form of the top-weight, Amor, High Falutin' 7 g Modest’ 0 Boy 8 6 ! iaS b , een wonderfully consistent, and Big Bertha 7 6 Arikitoa . . 713 I > e should go again well, wet or Myrtle 7 0 War Officer 713 fine. Tidal will be well suited here, Mon Star . 7 0 . especially if the going is good, rnuppic will be all the better for his outing last Wednesday, and Modest Boy will find this field not quite so select as the Queen’s Plate. Arikitoa is in good fettle, and War Officer was unlucky the first day. Moy Hall will need to have improved on his last outing, but both High Falutin’ and Big Bertha are fancied. Court Jester is preferred to those further down. Summing up backers may declare in favour of: ARIKITOA and AMOR I? 30 MIDSUMMER HANDICAP % * Of £500; 5 furlongs * R 5 With such a big field at the Pellette ..75 Awamutu ..82 awkwardly situated five furlong Vali •• • . 7 •> Dalston ..81 Currajong ..70 Cymon .. . 712 P° st the draw for positions is vital, Gay E) Uke . 7 n Desert Son g 711 and it takes an exceptional sort to Norval Tea . 7 0 §fe y nm a tn e ey 7 8 T in fr ° m , w ® U out ' Gemlight is still ' \ £ Hunting Cry 7 5 fancied if he gets a small marble, Fairy Bell . 7 0 and so too is the top-weight, although he has a big impost. Dalston is a real good sort, and such a big strider that the rush out of the tapes may find him wanting. Cymon is useful, and so too is Desert Song, while Glenartney, a fine youngster, has shown pace on the tracks. Of those at the bottom Praetor is preferred. It is difficult to sum up without a prior knowledge of the draw, but well-placed, backers may stick to: GEMLIGHT and GLENARTNEY 1 NEW YEAR’S HURDLES Of £500; 2 miles fumgan? 1 . 10 11 with two da > s form to S° u » on ..00 King’s Guard 10 10 backers should be able to sort this pi a «rr» u n Pouri 10 10 t>lago ... 9 0 Royal ‘Form 913 one out > that is * unless there is Farndon ..90 Uralla ... 911 going to be a big upset. Beaumont, n Eaa°y an cin’tra l U 9 Lady Cintra and Karamu have done MangaTtT .' .' 0 0 Karamu ... 9 4 wel1 ’ whlle the winners, Pouri and Glenotus ..90 Mangani, are again engaged. Pouri won well on Friday, and this form was perhaps a bit better than that registered by Mangani on the opening day. King’s Guard looked in need of a race when he raced on Boxing Day. Two that will come in for some support are: POURI and LADY CINTRA 0 1 A A.R.C. HANDICAP Of £1,750; 1£ miles Pegaway ... 9 3 This is the Cup field over again, and a fine one at Count 4 that. It is unfortunate that Laughing Prince is not Mask° m * si*; engaged, and it is to be hoped that he will be on Vertigern I 1 S 4 hand for Wednesday. Pegaway is now on top, and Oratrh? .’.S3 there is no doubt that his form to date has been highHoylake *. *. 1 *8 2 class. However, it is considered that he might have Catkin 7 9 been troubled seriously by Bright Glow had not the Transformer 7 6 latter got into trouble just after the start. Count Cavour White Fang .72 has gone up a few pounds, but Mask has been raised Papatu . ,° W . 7 0 81b, and on his form he cannot be recommended. VertiTidal .... 7 o gern is a newcomer, and with fair going to may be Thursby ... 7 0 prominent. Corinax has gone up a stone, and he won so well in the Cup that he is going to take some heading off. Oratrix can be ticked off to go better on top of the ground, for she could not raise a gallop last week. Hoylake will want the ground firm, and if he gets it will be troublesome. Catkin is a really dangerous candidate, and if he is well handled might win. On the other side of the handicap White Fang (who may find it a bit far), Golden Wedding, Papatu and Tidal are favoured. It is a nice field, with favouritism probably resting between: CORINAX and HOYLAKE 9CC GREAT NORTHERN DERBY **•''** Of £3,000; V> miles Metellus . . 810 This is the most open race seen £ ecl C ? ieck | l , e ?if 9 Cashier ... 8 10 Sir Russell . SlO Perception, Red Heckle, Sir Russell, Briar Root . 8 7 Tcheka, Briar Hoot, Gold Money, Mithra, Prodice and White Wings, so that with this number possessing chances the betting should cover a wide range. It is going to be a thrilling struggle, with most support probably forthcoming for: TOXEMUA and PRODICE *?4ft COUNTY HANDICAP Of £400; 7 furlongs J°‘ ly M°n ey . so There ar6 some-promising hacks Ambrosia ..70 A»r King . . 8 10 * ° Brilliant Frothblower 8 8 engaged in this seven furlongs Light ... 7 0 SS' 1 ' 7il flutter, and it should be a fine con- Carmint' '. ! 7 0 Hdkttnoa . . 7 12 Foxhound ..70 Court Jester 712 test. Hakanoa was a bit unlucky on Friday, and handled a bit more patiently he must have a chance. Court Jester will not lack friends, and Mussie is an improving hack with plenty of speed, and he is now coming good. Sunny Morn failed in the heavy going on Friday, but this can be overlooked. Brilliant Light, Good Boy, Just Nell, Palmares and Royal Flower (unlucky on Friday) may be the best of the remainder. The public fancies may be:

HAKANOA and MUSSIE 4 NEWMARKET HANDICAP * fet/ Of £750; 6 furlongs Aussie .... 9 11 Although there are only ten acceptors in the sprint Paganelli ..94 class is strongly represented, and it should be a fine Cimabue . . 811 contest. Aussie is at the top of his form, and with The’eaVk ' "g I flrrr ! soill k' win take some beating, especially as he will Teatime * s 3 again be bracketed with Awarere, who, too, will go better Kingfield ! ! 7 S on bard turf. Paganelli is very fit, and will be a danHigh Finance 7 0 gerous candidate. Cimabue is returning to form, and Macroom . . 7 (I if he gets the conditions to his liking may make matters Town Bird . 7 0 very interesting for the opposition. The Hawk will count many friends, and if the ground is hard Tea Time will go a great race, to beat more than beat him. Kingfield was a disappointment on Friday when the conditions were made for him, and High Finance and town Bird are sure to be in the picture over the early part. Best-backed may be the:

AUSSIE-AWARERE BRACKET and TEA TIME 5 15 GLASGOW HANDICAP Of £550; 7 furlongs Brandon 6 119 f: The bigest field Of the day Will Ohmemuri .7 n Flying Juliet S 3 contest the final event, and here Auriculus ’. ’.7 0 Wedding . s 3 punters are promised something to Lunette K * 7 <? Flying Juliet ‘ <’ Liaison ... 7 0 will be bettor suited by the condi- Eh Timi * * 7 n tions this time, and Golden Wed- ' ding, if reserved for this, is sure to be dangerous. Lady’s Boy may find the last furlong beyond him, and Beaumont may take on the hurdles again. Mervette has excellent recent form to recommend her, and she will have a host of admirers. She was a bit unlucky in the Te Awamutu Cup recently, which was her last start. Liaison is a good mare, but the big field might upset her Ohinemuri is in good form, and so too is Arihana, who has run two very fair races to date at Ellerslie. Auriculus is a newcomer, and so too is Cynthia X, who won handsomely at Waipa. Lunette is a promoted hack, and she has the pace necessary for this company. Marble King is preferred of the remainder. Perhaps the favourites may bet MERVETTE and BRANSON
