WELLINGTON’S EASY WIN

WICKET BEATS SUBURBAN TEAM

JUNIORS’ INNINGS VICTORY

The astonishing reversal of form of the Wellington junior representatives’ team after their defeat by Auckland on Thursday was the feature of their match against a Suburban Association representative team on Saturday. Batting first on a dead wicket they put up the satisfactory score of 162, not finishing their innings until nearly three in the afternoon. By that time back weafitietl ’had cleared and the wicket was drying fast, so that when Auckland came in, Griffiths and Bilby took wicket after wicket. Griffiths’s bowling was magnificent. He used the pitch as much as possible, and put on a spin that invariably sent the ball up in the air, generally to fall into the hands of a fielder. Seven out of the ten wickets that fell, therefore, were catches. Griffiths and Bilby, together, were responsible for the whole ©f the Wellington bowling right throughout the match, and their averages for the first innings were equal—five for 23.

Auckland, of course, followed-on, and for a few minutes it looked as if they might overcome the difficulties of the wicket. However, the first wicket fell with 15 runs up, and the total had only increased to 22 by the time the eighth felL Then a short partnership between the last tw’o men raised the total to 69

The game was entirely a bowler’s •match. There was little really interesting batting, oven the Wellington team in the morning playing very cautiously. It says much for the Wellington team's fielding that in Auckland’s two innings 15 men were caught out, nhd only one catch—and that a fairly difficult one—was dropped.
