SELF-WINDING GRAMOPHONE
A GRAMOPHONE which winds . “P automatically when the lid is lifted has been patented by a young engineer, Wilfred Jevons, and a clock-maker, Frank Norton, both of Manchester, England. Their device works on the principle of a roller blind. When the lid is lifted, two cords pull round a barrel coupled direct to the two springs of the clockwork motor. When the gramophone plays the unwinding springs rewind the cord and gradually pull the lid down again ready to be lifted. But the lid may be closed at once, if it is so desired. The machine looks like an ordfnary pedestal gramophone except for its more substantial lid and the absence of any winding crank. *t cannjt be overwound, as the cords are adjusted to give exactly the necessary 50 turns to the springs.
