HURDLERS CRASH

SEVERAL fancied candidates in the Grafton Hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday marred their chances by faulty jumping, this in part being due to the slippery turf. Ripon Abbey chanced a few fences while in the lead, and Lady Cintra was nearly down on two occasions, but for which she might have won. She should score at the meeting. Then Pouri was putting in a fine run that might have carried him to the front at the last fence, but two fences from home Potoanui crashed, bringing down Mangaiti, and Pouri toppled over the latter. Beaumont made a good first showing at Ellerslie. Uralla tipped out at the first obstacle, so no guide could be obtained about his prospects. Wharncliffe was badly tailed off five furlongs from the finish, and then put in a phenomenal run into fourth place. He looks like coming right back to that form which enabled him to win the Grand National Hurdles nearly 18 months ago.
