Fashion Gets Into Print
SMART GESTURES IN THE RAIN Colourful Wet Weather Modes
A LTHOUGH the rain of the early morning made it impossible for women to wear all the delightful modes of summer that had been planned to make to-day's racing at Ellerslie a brilliant fashion pageant, it could not unite dampen the dress ardour of the fair racegoers. Their ensembles of lace and chiffon and other gossamer stuffs remained hanging at home in their wardrobes, and their flattering picture hats with flower-laden brims hid their beauty in dim hat-boxes. But for all that the scene on the lawns was far from drab or uninteresting. Colour was introduced into everything—hats. umbrellas, boutonnieres and raincoats were all as vivid as possible, and on the stands glimpses were seen of gay little frocks of printed fabrics that flaunted their dainty patterns, all undismayed by' weeping skies. Prints of floral persuasion were particularly popular and diffeernt from any we have previously had. There was nothings of their naivete left, either in design or colour, for the flowers instead of blooming in solitary state or blossoming in prim bouquets on their surfaces, were mostly cleverly blended into one another. There were piquantly new lights and shadows on them, too—a mauve cast on the roses, an accent of chartreuse, a sense of dusty pinks and blacks of gorgeous yellow combined with brown. Sometimes there were as many as a dozen colours and shades in one design, all so deftly manipulated that one could not disentangle them except after close analysis Among those present were: Lady Lockhart, navy blue frock of georgette banded with satin, and blue hat. with flat velvet flowers.
