ITALIAN LEADER DEAD

FIELD-MARSHAL CADORNA LED ARMIES IN WAR (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) ROME, Monday. The death has occurred of FieldMarshal Cadorna, who led the Italian armies in the early stages of tl '•* Great War. Count L.uigi Cadorna was the son of Count Kafaele Cadorna, the leader of the Italian army that invaded the Papal States in 1870. He was born in ISSO, and was educated at the military school in Turin. He entered the Italian Army in IS6B, and saw’ active service on his father's staff in 1870. By 1905 he had risen to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. In 1911 he succeeded General Pollio as chief of the general staff. When Italy, in May, 1915, entered the Great War, Cadorna was appointed commander-in-cliief, and he continued to hold that position until immediately after the Caporetto defeat, 1917, when he was superseded by General Diaz. In July, 191 S, Cadorna was deprived not only of his rank, but of his retired pav; but in 1924 he was rehabilitated by th? Mussolini Government, which created him a field-marshal.
