SUICIDE AVERTED
WOMAN SAYS SHE WILL , JUMP OFF GRAFTON BRIDGE ARRESTED TO SAVE HER LIFE Dissuaded by a constable from jumping over Grafton Bridge, Florence Eugene Thompson expressed her intention on Saturday night of throwing herself into the harbour, and had to be arrested before she could be pacified. Thompson, described as a domestic, aged 25, was charged at the Police Court this morning with being idle and disorderly having insufficient lawful means of support. She answered the charge by denying that she was idle. According to Sub-Inspector McCarthy, Thompson had been living with a Dalmatian in Khyber Pass for two years. He was a decent fellow, but had met with injuries which had cut down his earning capacity. The i small amount of money he had brought home had started a row which had ended with Thompson wandering out on to the street. “A constable overheard her saying that she would throw herself over Grafton Bridge,” continued the sub-inspector. “As we have had too many people doing that lately, he stopped her. She then said that she would jump off the i wharf and had to be arrested to save her life.” Mr. McCarthy thought the ; whole thing was the result of a fit of I temper, and that the woman would be ! all right if she were given her liberty, j The case was adjourned for a week to enable the female probation officer, ! Major Annie Gordon, to investigate.
