Lucky Seven

TJOW merrily do our Yankee friends indulge in their crap game, rolling the squared bones and their eyes, beseeching the while to "come up seven.” What two-up is to the Aussie, so is the dice to the American. They are truly national pastimes. Here we have horse racing and draughts. Which all leads to comment on the run of success in important races notched by horses whose names are made up of seven letters only. Time and again do the sevenlettered - handled equines bob up serenely, sometimes when least expected. A few seasons ago there was quite an epidemic of successes recorded in their favour. Perhaps the lucky seven will pertain at Ellerslie the next few days. The following horses coming under the seven - lettered heading are among those down to compete at Ellerslie on Wednesday:— Cup—Oratrix, Goshawk, Hoylake, Corinax and Thursby. Railway Handicap Cimabue, Awarere, The Hawk, Tea Time and Consent. Queen’s Plate—Cashier, Kinross, Moorgas and Sir Mond. Foal Stakes —Ciopton and Awamutu. Grafton Hurdles—Mangani. Nursery Handicap Awamutu, Dalston and Pure Tea. Christmas Handicap—Pegaway, Prodice, Toxeuma, Macroom and Tinokoa. To date eleven horses whose names are made up of seven letters have been successful in the Auckland Cup, half a dozen have won the Railway Handicap, and ten the Foal Stakes.
