FINAL GALLOPS
IMPRESSIVE WORK-OUTS ELLERSLIE’S BUSY MORNING There was plenty of galloping at Ellerslie this morning, the outside of the course proper, with the trestles about 40 feet out, being in excellent order, and the going fast. Ceremony and Corinax took the principal honours, while Aussie and Paganelli set a hot standard for the sprinters. ST AG HUNTER covered six furlongs in 1.18 2-5. the first two in 27 1-5, and finished full of running. Speedlight. from almost a stand, ran home from the five in’ 1.6 1-5, getting to the end of the first two in 24 3-5. It was a good trial. Honour again impressed by beating Phillipic home over five furlongs in 1.4 1-5, after running the initial two in 24 1-5. He is in great order. Gold Money went half a mile comfortably in 50, and Sir Russell was full of running when he beat Lido over five in 1.5 2-5. The two-year-old Ceremony followed his brilliant sprint on Saturday with a very smart five. He slipped over the first two furlongs in 24, and was going strongly at the post in 1.3, the final three taking 39. This youngster is remarkably well and should be a winner at the meeting. A Fine Sprint The Railway Handicap performers, Lysander and Awarere, were again responsible for a smart effort. They cut out the first furlong in 12 4-5, and the quarter in 24 2-5, finishing up in 1.3 3-5, with Ly sander going the better a bit in front of his companion. The Cup candidates, Hoylake and Transformer, were sent one mile, and without being extended they finished up in 1.45 4-5. The former horse has come through his preparation excellently. Palmares beat War Officer from the four in a smart 49 4-5, and Pure Tea sprinted half a mile in 50 2-5, with Plying Juliet beating both Macroom and a companion over five in 1.4, the last three in 39. Flying Juliet did it splendidly. A two-year-old in Tilley’s stable, Glenartney, easily accounted for Alloy
and Desert Song at the end of four furlongs in 50 4-5. Glenartney is not engaged the first day, but may do really well in juvenile events later at the meeting. Oratrix Finishes On The Derby horses, Catkin and Oratrix, with Concentrate (who appeared to be tender in front), were dispatched over a round. Catkin, who got the best of the jump-off, was clear turning into the home stretch, but Oratrix came at him, and both ridden out thfey passed the post together in 2.6 3-5 for the round, with the other half a dozen lengths away. They covered, the last six furlongs in 1.20, and the last four in 52 3-5. so that it was quite a pleasing effort. Count Cavour and Mask again went a mile and a-quarter, with the former finishing in front two and a-half lengths clear of the Limond gelding. The latter was being ridden at the nine furlong post, and was running on at the finish, apparently having been loafing. They went the first halfmile in 53, the six in 1.20 3-5, and completed the ten furlongs in a useful 2.15 2-5. Two Ridden Out Corinax, Thursby, Papatu and Goshawk also went a mile and a-quarter, and there was a great finish between Corinax and Papatu. They were very slow over the first bit, the first three furlongs taking 42 1-5, half-mile 54 4-5, and six furlongs 1.22 4-5. Here Goshawk dropped out, and later Thursby also felt the pressure. Corinax had a couple of lengths lead over Papatu a furlong and a-half from the post but the latter under the whip decreased the margin and caught the leader, although Corinax was holding him as they finished neck-and-neck, with Goshawk and Thursby following at ten-length intervals. Corinax and Papatu did the journey in a great 2.14 2-5, the last round in 2.3 1-5, which is better than two minutes when compared with the old round, which was about 66 yards shorter. Papatu covered a lot of extra ground, but all the same the honours could be awarded to Corinax. Goshawk did not do well, and it is very doubtful if he will start in the Cup. Finished Strongly Laughing Prince and Cashier were not bustled at the start of their mile and a-quarter, for it took them 56 1-5 to run the first half-mile, and 1.24 3-5 the first six. However, the pace was clapped on from here, the final four being cut out in 52 3-5, and the last three in 39 2-5. Laughing Prince looked like beating his companion easily, but the three-year-old finished strongly and was only half a length behind the Cup horse. The last circuit took 2.7 1-5. Metellus and High Falutin finished in that order at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.18 2-5, the last three in a smart 38 4-5. A couple of M. Carroll's two-year-olds, Tasty and Gay Duke, showed pace in a four-furlong spin, running the first in 12 1-5, and the half-mile in 50 3-5. with Tasty doing it better. Speedsters Tea Time finished a length and ahalf in front of Billikins and Ohinemuri from the five furlongs in 1.4, the first couple being cut out in a slick 24 3-5. Aussie covered his first two of five furlongs in 24 2-5, and then finished with a rattle to do the journey in 1.1 4-5, the final three in 37 2-5. Looking well. Paganelli started the spectators talking by slipping over half a mile in 48 1-5, the first furlong taking no longer than 11 4-5. The final three wede done in 36 2-5, which shows just how fast he is. With all his weight Paganelli is going to take a lot of beating. There were plenty of other gallops timed, but only those that impressed are given above.
