TOMATO GROWERS

N.Z. CONFERENCE IN 1929 AUCKLAND WILL BE THERE The Auckland Tomato and Stone Fruit Growers’ Council will be represented at the New Zealand conference of the newly-formed Dominion Tomato Growers’ Council to be held in Wellington on January 23, 1929, under the presidency of Mr. T. C. Brash, president of the New Zealand Fruit Growers’ Federation. This decision was made at a meeting of the Auckland Executive of the Council held last week when it was decided that Mr. George A. Green, honorary secretary, should be delegate from this province. The business at the conference will include the adoption of rules and the consideration of the courfcil’s policy for the coming season. It is expected that standardisation of pack and grades for the fruit, with standard cases will be among the questions to be considered with a view to improving the marketing. There are now five district associations prepared to link up with the Dominion movement. The total amount involved in tomato growing is estimated at over £500,000, and the growers in the association number about 500. Several other associations contemplate organising with a view to linking up with the council.
