MASONIC INSTALLATION LODGE PAPATOETOE NO. 227 Every lodge in the Auckland district was represented at the installation in the Papatoetoe Town Hall on Thursday evening of Bro. Herbert Spencer Thomas as Worshipful Master of Lodge Papatoetoe, No. 227. and the investiture of officers for the ensuing year. M. Wor. Bro. O. Nicholson, P.G.M., officiated as installing master, and he was supporetd by V. Wor. Bro. W. C. Finnis, G.D. of C., as director of ceremonies: Wor. Bro. R. E. Laxon, W.M. Lodge Manukau, No. 24; Wor. Bro. R. H. Insull, W.M. Lodge Prince of Wales, No. 1335, E.C., as presenting officers; Bros. A. Murdoch, Lodge of Harmony, No. 21S0, E.C., musical director; Bro. E. Eddy, Lodge Maungawhau, No. 108, Bro. H. C. Strong, Lodge Auckland, No. S 4, as heralds. At the conclusion of the installation ceremony, Wor. Bro. TAURANGA TOPICS At the monthly meeting of the Tauranga Hospital Board the secretary was instructed to telegraph to the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy congratulating him upon his appointment as Minister of Health. The medical superintendent reported an average of 27 patients for the month. The matron of the Te Puke Maternity Hospital reported that a sum of £67 had been netted by the garden fete. Tennis courts for the staff were authorised. A motion that no member of the permanent staff be allowed to take outside employment, necessitating their absence from their regular hours, was lost. The first cricket match for a silver challenge cup presented by Mr. E. T. Raker, to be competed for by boys from the District High Schools, was played on the Tauranga Domain between teams from Matamata and Tauranga schools and resulted in a win for the local boys, the scores being Tauranga 72, Matamata 48. A pleasing function took place at the infant school, when, on the invitation of the mistress. Miss Terry, a large number of parents were present to inspect the work done by the pupils. There was a splendid exhibition of cut-paper and plasticine work. It is reported that the Commercial Hotel is changing hands, Mr. G. Henderson having sold out to Mr. Armstrong. Mr. Henderson has been in charge for the last eight years, and has made a host of friends in the town ;tnd district, as well as among the travelling public. MORRINSVILLE NEWS There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Morrinsville Horticultural Society this week, and it was decided to hold the next show on March 8. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £SB 19s. Officers were elected as follow:—Patron, Mr. G. Howie; president, Mrs. J. C. Allen; vice-presidents, Mrs. R. G. Fawkner and Mr. G. F. Oates; committee, Messrs. J. H. Wyatt, B. Chapman and Mesdames L. Eclilin, G. F. Oates, F. M. Stringfield, S. H. Cornish, A. Donny, Misses Ha nan and Donnj" secretary, Miss Hanan; treasurer, Mr. J. H. Wyatt; auditor, Air. T. J. Ryan: schedule committee. Mesdames Allen and Fawkner and Messrs. Chapman and Oates. * * * Despite a rumour, the cases of scarlet fever in Morrinsville are less numerous than is usual at this period of the year. A medical authority says that the statements that the town water supply is liable to cause infection are groundless.
KING COUNTRY NEWS The following scholars of the Raurimu School succeeded in gaining proficiency certificates: Jean Anderson, Marion Anderson, Bessie Henderson, Thelma Henderson, Violet Henderson, T. Henderson and W. Henderson. * * * The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Kaitieke Sports Club: Patron, Mr. T. Crocker; president, Mr. W. H. Edwards; secretary, Mr. L. Iv. Evans, one of the insurance company representatives on the Taumarunui Fire Board, intimated at the last meeting that he would be resigning office, and it was resolved to place on record the board's appreciation of the great service Mr. Evans had rendered while a member. The following are the proficiency examination results for the Kaitieke School: Annie Inverarity, Fred Cocker, John Edwards. Correspondence classes: Keith Bartley. Maungaroa School: L. Pritchard, T. Begge, T. Dobbs and O. Dobbs. Cr. G. Thompson has been appointed chairman of the Taumaruniii Borough Council Works Committee, vice Cr. T. Broad, resigned owing to ill-health. The council is instituting proceedings against a Lower Rangaroa resident who started a scrub fire without a permit, as a result of which several valuable residences were endangered, and the fire brigade had over three hours’ hard fight to gain control of the flames. WHANGAREI NOTES Some time ago the Whangarei Frivolity Minstrels began to work for a concert to raise funds to instal a wireless set in the Whangarei Hospital. Their project met with a generous response, inasmuch as the necessary amount was secured at their first performance. Last night saw their objective reached when Mr. S. Walker, president, official iv installed the set. ® The machine is a first-elass*one, similar to those installed in the Wellington Hospital and the Auckland T.B. shelters. After the opening of the set, the minstrels were congratulated by Mr. T. Ellis, chairman of the Hospital Board, the Mayor, Mr. L. J. Brake, and Mr. A. .T. Murdoch, M.P. The troupe then entertained the patients with a short performance An improvement of £l5O in the revenue of the Whangarei Harbour Board was shown for the month of November, 1928, as compared with November, 1927. The total revenue received for November amounted to £1,305 15s 3d, and the tonnage 11,137 tons. The board received a letter from the Director of Air Service, stating that the Harbour Board's rec’amation area, which had been proposed as a suitable site for an airdrome, was very satisfactory. The matter was referred to the Whangarei Aviation Club. Mr. J. E. Holmes stated that it was now a matter for the local club to organise the next step in North Auckland aviation. The prosperity of the present season in the Whangarei district can be gauged by the second pay-out yesterday by the Whangarei Dairy Company of a total sum of £23,167.
