DEATH PENALTY STANDS
ASSAULT ON A GIRL WOY WOY APPEAL FAILS Reed. 10 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. The Full Court to-day dismissed the appeal on behalf of Martin Jacobsen, of Woy Woy, against his conviction and sentence to death for criminally assaulting his former fiancee. The case caused a great stir owing to an allegation that the girl was a consenting party. Over 300 residents of Woy Woy signed a petition asking that the death sentence passed on Martin Jacobsen for a capital offence on a girl be reviewed (said a recent message). Public indignation has been aroused over the sentence. Jacobsen was formerly engaged to the girl, who was among the first to sign the petition. Public meetings were held in the town, and feeling ran high.
