Historic and the Manawatu Cup
JOTTINGS FROM TRENTHAM (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Heavy rain has fallen in this end of the Island, and by the loots of things there is a good deal more to follow. The prospects are that the courses down this way will not be fast for the holiday meetings, and they might be on the heavy side. This morning’s work at Trentham was got through just before the rain began to fall. The inside of the trial grass was used, and the going was good. The Manawatu Cup candidate. Historic, was sent a mile, which he covered in 1.473. It was merely a fair effort, but he. might have done a little better if pressed. As there was a suspicion of soreness In his mot ements after the gallop he has eased somewhat in favour for the Manawatu Cup. It / transpires now that he is not an absolutely certain starter in the Cup, but he is to be taken to the meeting, and if he does well will start on one of the later days. It is expected that A. Fratus will ride him in his races. First Money and Duellona sprinted five furlongs very pleasingly. Their time was 1.5, and they could both have improved on it. First Money has the better reputation of the pair, but on the showing of Duellona at Riccarton this one might surprise the admirers of First Money. For a Moderate Handicap Panther is looking in great order. He went an easy half-mile, not exerting himself at all, but he is just the sort to win over a middle distance when the company is moderate. He is to race at the Manawatu Christmas fixture. Australis, who is booked for Awapuni to contest the hack sprint races, was galloped with Decoy Bird, who •usually goes well on the track, and was not good enough for the Humbug gelding, who finished up seven furlongs in 1.321. Decoy Bird does not seem to go as well in a race as on the track, but he is not a forlorn hope yet. Australis might pick up a sprint race during the holidays, as he is fairly smart and is well. Rotowhero was much too good for Panorama, with whom he ran half a mile. Kentish Lady goes on improving, and this morning she did a very nice six furlongs in 1.24. Sapient, a youngster in S. Reid’s stable, did half a mile in 50i, an effort equalled by another member of Reid's team, Roi de Val. The latter is to run in the Maiden Plate at Awapuni on Boxing Day, and if he strikes his best he will be a very troublesome opponent for the others engaged. The son of Lackham is a smart galloper, but it will be remembered that he failed at Riccarton in the spring. He looks better now, however, and the maidens who will be opposed to bim do not look a good lotEndorse cut out half a mile in 50, showing that he has lost none of his pace. Becky Sharp beat Dresden China over half a mile in 51.
