DECEMBER
(By
CHARLES STUART PERRY).
Drab walls, old faces, and the same routine Of dreary work .... Sometimes my weary eyes, Straining over the pages, dimly seen, Suddenly glimpse a hillside, where cool breezes lurk, And black tall trees lie flat against the skies. And down beside the hill, the lucent sea A stained-glass restfulness, all green and blue With little flecks of gold: or a roll of white Thundering on to the sand; and a little quay Whence lithe white bodies, in a curve clear and true. Cut the still air, a flash of living light. And when these visions pass before my eyes My ledger pales before the summer skies.
