YESTERDAY
$ (By
BETTY KNELL).
\ I climbed to the brow of the hill and looked down t And I saw ? Far beneath ' And so still that it had the appearance of J death, \ The sea. One ship with its smudging of smoke Crawled the horizon, i And nothing beside. } Below, in a line with the sky and the sea, J Ran the road. J Men, minute as ants \ And fussily working \ Spotted its surface and moved to and fro With a scurrying motion. t The smell of the tar and the smell of the sea ? Came haunting my nostrils. ) And under my feet, and trailing the bushes, J So close that the veining showed clear on S the petals \ Grew starry clematis .... Came a breathing of wind. The flowers stirred. ; Below on the sea ' Waves ruffled the stillness. ! And all up the hill from the valley beneath Arose whispering voices. Beyond in the City the sirens discordantly sounded, i Now faint and now clear. ? And the spell of the morning was broken. ' FIRST PRIZE $
