DOG SAVES A LIFE
NATIVE BURIED IN BANK ANIMAL ATTEMPTS RESCUE (Special to THE SUN), KAIKOHE, Thursday. A young Maori, Buck Whaturi, owes his life to a dog. Wliature was working with other natives on a cutting on the KaikoheWaimatenue Road yesterday, when a bank caved in and buried him. Instead of trying to rescue him, his mates became frightened and ran off for assistance. Mr. Douglas, a settler, was passing in his car. He saw a dog excitedly scratching into the fallen earth and yelping pitifully. He stopped and found that the animal had uncovered 9, hand and part of an arm. He immedately set to work and, with help that arrived, rescued the lad. Whaturi was taken to the Bay of Islands Hospital, where it was found that beyond a number of bruises and abrasions he had escaped with a broken ankle.
