Poets’ Corner

HIS MOUTH (Written for THE SUN J I met a vagrant man once, Along a crooked street; His clothes were thin and shabby, But, ah, his mouth was sweetp His sombre eyes were dream-lit; I asked, but none could tell, Why his mouth curved with laughter, Ah, me, I loved it well. He gave me friendly greeting, And bared his gipsy head; l tremulously curtsied, But not one word I said. We travelled on together, As children, hand in hand; The day was at the morning, And emerald-bright the land. We flung a song above us. Beyond the crooked street : We danced a measure lightly, On vagabondish feet. We parted in fine manner, When 'the moon hid her light. And on his mouth was laughter, But in my heart was night. His mouth shall haunt me always, Serene and laughter-wise. So shall the sombre beauty Of his dream-laden eyes. IVY GIBBS. Auckland. GREEN (Written for THE SUNJ When l was little I saw the moon Glimmering in a green lagoon. I ran and got me line and net, Hoping to haul it up, all wet, And take it home, the pretty fish! Alas, I never got my wish. When I was grown, in two green eyes 1 saw —poor me—a paradise. I wove a line of golden hair, I cast a net of love and prayer. And day by day with tender care I tried to catch what wasn’t there. MARGARET MACPHERSON. Kaitaia
