HOSPITAL MATRON HONOURED AT PARTY
About 75 people were present at a farewell afternoon given to Miss Cussen, matron of the Franklin Memorial Hospital, held in the "W esley Hall, Waiuku, on Wednesday. Dr. C. E. Howden, in a letter, expressed regret at her departure and extended best wishes for her future success. The first baby born in the hospital after Miss Cussen took over control, little Thelma Goulding, presented Miss Cussen with a beautiful bouquet. A pianoforte solo was played by Mrs. Mclntosh and a song was given by Mrs. Berry. Mr. J. D. Chalmers, Franklin representative on the Auckland Hospital Board, said that since the Franklin Memorial Hospital was opened on April 28, 1923, there had been 948 patients admitted. Of this number 366 were maternity cases, and only two babies had died after birth and one mother, which is a record for the Dominion. A large amount of the credit of this record is attributable to Miss Cussen, who had been matron since February, 1924. Mrs. A. James, on behalf of the many friends of Miss Cussen. read an address eulogising her work, after which she presented the guest with a handbag and a substantial roll of notes.
